Literature Review

I would like to discuss three recent journal articles which address common questions I hear regarding chiropractic care.

Frequently here at The Joint in Sugar House we are asked if we can treat women during pregnancy. In most Salt Lake City cases, chiropractic care during pregnancy is not only safe, but is also an effective way to manage the lower back pain that is common during the later stages of pregnancy. According to an article titled “Optimizing pain relief during pregnancy using manual therapy” published in Canadian Family Physician in Aug 2013, “massage therapy and chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, are highly safe and effective evidence-based options for pregnant women suffering from mechanical low back and pelvic pain.” As pregnancy progresses the pregnant woman's center of mass shifts forward leading to an increased lumbar lordosis which in turn leads to lower back and pelvic pain. Regular chiropractic care can help to alleviate this pain.

Another common question I hear at The Joint in Sugar House is “How long will it take to get better?” This is a complicated question because the answer depends on a variety of things such as: the amount of time the problem has been present, cause of the problem, the technique used, activities of daily living, etc. This being said, the most common problem for which Salt Lake CIty patients seek chiropractic care is for lower back pain relief. In October of this year an article was published in 'Spine' addressing this issue as it relates to chronic lower back pain. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups. All participants had chronic lower back pain. Each group was randomly assigned to a treatment plan of either 0, 6, 12, or 24 chiropractic adjustments. The conclusion states that for chronic lower back pain 12 visits provided the most improvement, with some continued improvement noted beyond that number. In other words, the first 12 visits seem to provide the greatest improvement for chronic lower back pain. Patients who receive continued care continued to show some improvement and relief as well.

The third article discusses the question of the safety of chiropractic care for patients with a confirmed disc injury. An October 2013 study published in 'Journal of Manipulative Therapy' studied patients with cervical disc herniations under chiropractic care. At the end of the study it was found that after 2 weeks of treatment 55.3% of patients showed improvement, at1 month 68.9% reported significant improvement, and at 3 months 85.7% were improved. “The study concluded that most patients in this study reported significant improvement with no adverse events.”
